Wandering along Kanchenjunga Day 2

Day 2

The morning flight from New Delhi to Bagdogra...the airport of Siliguri... on a bright sunny day was a visual treat... Our flight path was along the the great curve of the Himalayan Mountains... The Abode of Snow....

The glistening snow capped peaks of the Himalayan Mountain Range peeking through the clouds looked like  fluffs of cotton spread out at the horizon... so soft and delicate...

It was an artists delight...
The backdrop... a blend of various hues of blue... of the sky highlighted these pristine white peaks....

The ranges seen at the horizon are the higher ranges of The Himalayas and the ones in the foreground are also part of it but the lesser range...

These pictures were taken when the flight was preparing to land at Bagdogra...

...And that was the first visual treat of Kanchenjunga massif known as Kanchenjunga Himal...

Kanchenjunga, meaning five treasures of the snow after its five peaks, has been worshiped by the people of Sikkim and Darjeeling from the times of yore...

Once at Bagdogra...it was time to traverse the remaining distance from Siliguri to Gangtok by land...

At Bagdogra we were at a height of 413 ft /126 mts. It was quite warm for the second week of December...

                                                                              ~~~ oOo ~~~
The route taken was alongside the River Teesta, a mountainous terrain
Roads built on the sides of the mountains are winding, with each turn opening to a new delightful vista....
The countryside is peppered by forests, perennial rivers that join The Bramhaputra in Bangladesh, hamlets and of course is replete with some  friends of Mowgli who are adept at jumping from branch to branch... the Assam Macaque...
Once the dusk sets in, the houses lit by golden lights made the terrain look like hills full of fireflies... By late evening we reached Gangtok which is at 5412ft/1650 mts...  130 kms of mountainous terrain covered in 4.30 hours. As we entered the higher area we could feel the bite of the chilly winds...
And that was the Day 2
We had traversed at least twelve of these mounts to cover the 130 kms  stretch... some wound around, some cut across by swishing in and out of the tunnels... It was like zipping around in the Coorg of yore but on a larger scale... At times where settlement could be seen the entire hill would be covered with colourful houses ... They made a pretty picture with the tall mountains, the floating mists, the green forests and the emerald river with the white sand banks... But in reality, it's a tough life for the dwellers...
